Welcome to this new athletics web site.
This new site has been set up by Joe Walker, throws coach at Derby Athletic Club in response to the aims of the athletics coaching partnership set up between Derby Athletic Club, Amber Valley Athletic Club and Chesterfield and District Athletic Club. International athlete Daniel Caines is leading this initiative.
I am presenting this site as a possible forum for all throws coaches in the county to help, advise each other and move forward the throwing events in Derbyshire. This site can be used to communicate with other coaches and identify any useful coaching courses or meetings which you may find useful. I have added some links to throws sites around the world and this list will no doubt grow as we go. This site is a blog site so you can use the site to pass advice or info to each other. Athletes are also invited to pitch in.
The coaching partnership, led by Daniel, has been set up to encourage new coaches into the sport and support existing coaches by way of providing mentoring in the various events. This website hopefully will be part of that role.
I specialise in Hammer, Javelin and Discus and I have been coaching these events for about 30 years now.
I have included some of my personal coaching notes, which describe how I personally coach these three events. Input on the shot put is being put together and will be updated onto the site in due course. My athletes are in the age range of 14 years up to veteran, with by far the majority in their mid teens, so the coaching notes are very much biased towards this age group. I have extracted some of these personal coaching notes for the three long throws and attached them for your information. If you find them useful, good, and if you would like to add your own coaching comments, we will be glad to hear them.
If any of you have any coaching articles you would like to publish, it can be included under the events list on the right as a permanent page for reference by other coaches and athletes.
A very useful publication some years ago was a magazine produced by Max Jones called “The Thrower” which provided me with a lot of useful coaching information, which I still use today. It could be that we could build up some sort of library of information, which could be used by all coaches everywhere. I would like to think that this can be extended to areas outside the county in the course of time so if there are any of you throws coaches outside the county or even overseas wanting to chip in, your input would be welcome. I’m sure you can’t wait!
Here at Derby AC we have about 30 throwers from Derby AC and Amber Valley AC, more or less equally spread between hammer, javelin and discus, and I will produce a resume of the achievements of the squad over the season just finished.
For my throws group in Derby, I will use this site to keep you up to date with any changes to the coaching programme in Derby. For starters, see the link on the right for the current schedule (Derby Throws Squad Messages) .
I have a page for Derbyshire throws coaches attached on the right. I am putting together a list of throws coaches in the county and beyond and this will be published as soon as it is completed.
I have attached a number of useful links for coaches and athletes on the right.
